The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off at Super Bowl LVII this Sunday, February 12, but it seems God of War Ragnarok's Kratos and/or Thor may be in attendance too. Via its PlayStation Canada Facebook and Instagram posts, Sony has confirmed God of War Ragnarok's presence and issued a press release on the matter.
While God of War Ragnarok's appearance at Super Bowl LVII may be surprising given the game was released last year, the Super Bowl is known for its plethora of ads every year (alongside the football, of course). Already, ads and trailers related to popular IPs like Breaking Bad and Scream 6 have aired, while Logan Paul and KSI's Prime drink and The Flash are scheduled for ads during the Super Bowl too. With this in mind, it's not too surprising to see Sony confirm a showing of its own related to one of its biggest releases of 2022.
PlayStation Canada posted a short clip of a winter storm surrounding Thor's Mjolnir in God of War Ragnarok, teasing that Fimbulwinter will hit the Superbowl on February 12. This short little teaser was then supported by a press release (shared by PSU), stating that "Odin's ravens" spotted this teaser and that it is "forecasting a blizzard on Midgard this Sunday night. To see how it all plays out, make sure you tune into the big game this weekend!" Of course, the biggest question now is what will be shown.
It's unlikely to be related to any potential DLC for God of War Ragnarok because game director Eric Williams has previously stated that there were no plans for that, as Santa Monica put everything it could into the rather large and lengthy game. It could possibly be tied to God of War Ragnarok's New Game Plus mode, but the most likely result is a simple ad for the game. Sony is likely to advertise the PS5 with its Norse adventure, especially as supply droughts for the hardware have mostly come to an end. It could be something big, but the best bet is just a simple PS5 ad.
Of course, God of War still has a future regardless of what happens at the Super Bowl. The New Game Plus mode is set to come sometime this spring, and while God of War Ragnarok is the final game of the Norse Saga, its ending leaves open untold possibilities for future sequels or spin-offs. If anything is certain, it's that nothing like that will be there, but the beloved IP has a bright future no matter what.
God of War Ragnarok is available now for PS4 and PS5.
